A Pear A Day Keeps the Cholesterol Away

pear-nutrition

You might know the old adage, an apple a day keeps the doctor away, well, the same can be said about pears. I have come up with a new quote, a pear a day keeps the cholesterol away.

Why is that? Pears are high in fiber that's why. Fiber or soluble fiber which is found in pears, binds with the cholesterol in the body and moves it out of the system so it won't be absorbed in the bloodstream. If you increase your daily fiber intake to 21-38 grams a day, you can decrease your cholesterol levels by 15-20 percent. Pears have as much fiber as steel cut oatmeal and if you combine the two, you would have one of the best ways of lowering your cholesterol next to taking statins(cholesterol lowering drugs).

Pears have become part of my new part-time vegan lifestyle. I have become a part-time vegan to lower my cholesterol. You can read about my journey on the following post: Lowering My Cholesterol As A Vegan. I wasn't a lover of pears and I only would eat them in a salad. Today was my first day eating a pear by itself and I must say it was delicious. I think it was a texture thing on why I didn't like them growing up. I guess I have grown out of my issue with the fruit.

What are the different types of pears

There are hundreds of varieties pears with different levels of fiber. Some are great for cooking while others are best eaten out of hand. The average pear has about 6 grams of fiber and the Asian pear has the highest amount of fiber among all pear varieties. It has 9 grams in a medium size fruit. Check out the different pears along with recipes you can try on USAPears.

If you have high cholesterol and you are looking for a natural way to lower your cholesterol, considering eating a pear everyday. Do you eat pears and what is your favorite variety?
