The Dollar Store Diet

Video:Man loses 250 lbs on a dollar store diet

A rapper named Papa Joe Aviance lost 250 pounds by eating the food he bought at the .99 cents store. I have to caveat right here because a lot of the dollar stores on the West coast carry fresh vegetables and fruits, but not in the dollars stores in other parts of the country.

He lost most of his weight by purchasing the staples like vegetables, beans, eggs, milk and meat and staying away from processed foods. His motto is "chips bad, salad good" and it is just that simple.

I have written several articles on eating healthy on a budget. Just because you are on a budget, it shouldn't stop you from losing weight. If your dollar store doesn't carry fresh vegetables, grocery stores
like Aldi and Save-A-Lot do or look for a deep-discount chain in your area.

Weight loss doesn't have to be expensive but it has to be well thought out. Check out some of my articles on frugal diet plans and get started today.

Does the .99 cents store in your area carry fresh fruits and vegetables?

  1. I don't think I've ever seen a dollar store with fresh fruits and veggies. Doesn't bother me too much. I don't mind splurging to get quality food.

  2. "Weight loss doesn't have to be expensive but it has to be well thought out." I've found this to be so true in my life! Dollar store food generally scares me, but I've never seen one of the caliber Papa Joe used.

  3. I've never seen a dollar store that carries produce or meat on the east coast... or the west coast for that matter, but the grocery stores on the west coast have plenty of inexpensive options for vegetables and fruits and there are tons farmers stands all over. I think you're right about inexpensive diets having to be well thought out. I think part of the problem is with finding recipes that have lots of overlapping, inexpensive ingredients.

  4. Our dollar stores don't have fruits and veggies, it would be great if they did! I agree that to stick to a diet you have to plan ahead.

  5. I, also, have never seen a dollar store with produce. But I totally agree that our budget shouldn't keep us from making healthy choices. For example, an order of fast food fries costs more than a bag of beans from a grocery store. Great article, Sheila!

  6. I have been to a few dollar stores in Orlando and I didn't see any fresh vegetable. I do believe that we can eat healthy on a budget. Well done, and thanks for coming by Teshuva!

  7. There are many places to purchase quality yet affordable produce. If there isn't a dollar store with produce, try a Super Walmart, Target, local CSA, fruit and vegetable stand, etc.
