Hiring A Personal Trainer When You Are On A Budget

You want to exercise but you are one of those who will not exercise unless someone is standing over you with a whip! Yes, you need additional motivation. Why not hire a personal trainer? I know you are reading this and saying: "Isn't this a frugal fitness site?" Yes, we are frugal that's why I want to give you some tips on hiring a personal trainer on the cheap.

  • Tip 1:  Decide whether you want to exercise at home or at a gym.  If the gym is your choice, go for one in your neighborhood, a YMCA, or a community center.  Shop around and get the best offer on a per hour workout basis.  Health clubs can be very expensive and you would end up paying extra for a personal trainer, anyway.
  • Tip 2:  You decide you don't want to go anywhere for your workouts; you’d rather exercise at home.  Consider training for less than 1 hour -- just 30 to 45 minutes.  See if a trainer would reduce their hourly fee for a 30-minute session. Believe me, you can get an excellent workout in 30 minutes; just be prepared to exercise when the trainer gets to your home. To quickly get to the main part of the workout, warm-up before the trainer arrives.
  • Tip 3:  If you want a full one-hour routine but don’t want to spend the full price associated with it, consider small group personal training.  You will need a couple of friends and/or family members (someone not living with you) to make up your small group. Prices for small group training are significantly lower than those of one on one training. I charge $65 per session for one on one, but only $25 to $40 per session, depending on the size of the group.
  • Prices vary also depending on geographic location.   Remember; if you opt for small-group workouts, make sure you surround yourself with dependable people. I've seen this happen a lot where someone gets a group going only to end up having to foot the entire bill just because the other participants bailed out on them. Remember:  The buck stops with you whether the remainder of the group is serious or not.
  • Tip 4:  Make sure your trainer is certified and understands your needs.  Small-group participants, make sure your personal trainer is experienced in group training sessions.  Those with muscle-skeletal conditions should address those with their personal trainer before starting a program.  Your personal trainer should be able to work around your limitations and still deliver adequate performance.
  • Tip 5: If you have a skill maybe you can barter your services.  One of my clients does my hair and I train her once a week; no monetary exchanges -- it's a win-win situation.
  • Tip 6 I don’t advise this tip for people with special needs as it requires not only a certain degree of confidence but limitation knowledge as well.  You could hire a personal trainer who is not yet certified.  Though they are still learning, apprentice trainers can administer effective workouts.  The challenge is in finding the right person.
Last but not least: A personal trainer can prescribe lifestyle changes but cannot impose those changes upon you. You are ultimately responsible for embracing your new challenges and achieving the best results you could ever dream of. You are in control.

    1. That's a good price, it gets people in the door especially in the summertime, when people do outdoor activities.

    1. $250 is a good price, now if that's 3 days a week, that's outstanding.

  3. Excellent tips. I think people need to be more open minded to realizing what they can get and how to do it creatively. Love the tip on "just ask' on the 1/2 hour rate instead of 1 hour and also on the bartering and small group.

I am visiting from over at the B2R Club. Looking forward to networking with you.

  4. A personal fitness training can also be used to promote toning or building of muscles, which are essentially the same physiological process. And gives the knowledge about the proper exercise prescription may result in improved body composition, physical performance etc.
