Last week I wrote a post on the latest diet craze, called the 5:2 diet, to hit the US coming from the UK. The diet works because I lost 4 pounds but it was difficult like any diet you attempt. I will list the pros and cons of what I felt about the program.
Pros
Easy to follow and it doesn't require a lot of money. It's very frugal
You don't have you to get rid of the foods you love
A great program if you have hit a weight loss plateau
Cons
You're constantly thinking about food on fasting days
The diet can make some people extremely irritable
You have to make sure you don't overeat on non fasting days

If you are going follow the 5:2 diet, I would recommend following the book so you don't fall into the trap of eating unhealthily on your fast and non fasting days. The 5:2 diet book by Jacqueline Whitehart has recipes based on the metric system. You might have to do some playing around with the measurements, if you want to make the recipes. A good recipe book for meals under 200 calories is The Hungry Girl 200 under 200, if you are looking for recipes to satisfy you and/or your family.
I hear fasting can reverse the greying process. Of course, this got me thinking that I should go on a fast for a month and see if this comes into fruition. Anyway, if you don't have the money and you are use to fasting for religious reasons, I say give it a try because it does help you lose weight but get your doctor's approval before starting any weight loss program.
I tend to get cranky when I don't eat :) Mine is a metabolism thing though, my sugar can get very low if I don't eat throughout the day. Luckily it also keeps me thin (along with exercise!). I know other people that have tried diets similar to this and loved them though, especially if they had a few last couple of pounds to lose and had tried everything else.
ReplyDeleteI love hungry girl books!! great recipes low in calories. I love to do Pilates
ReplyDeleteAfter three weeks of vacation I've been attempting to fast or at least detox, but I'm failing miserably. I just LOVE to eat ALL the time :)
ReplyDeleteI haven't heard of this one until now. My eating is very erratic - a lot of times I get so busy and caught up in whatever I am doing during the day that I forget to eat, then the next day I eat non-stop! I've never really fasted, so I'm not sure how I would handle that, but I'll definitely look into this further!
ReplyDeleteThis sounds like it would be very difficult for me to follow. It's funny how sometimes I'm so busy that I will actually go a day without eating and without thinking about it much, when I'm NOT dieting -- but if I'm dieting, from the second I start the diet my brain won't stop thinking about eating, and I'm not able to skip any meals.
ReplyDeleteI really think I can do this diet, I love that it's frugal, that's one thing that has turned me away from other diets, the plan can get really expensive.
