Having Cancer and Living a Healthy Lifestyle

If you have cancer, you might think that living healthy is entirely up to your doctor and how well you do when undergoing treatment. While you should always follow your doctor's orders, there are a few things you can do to promote better health and well being for yourself in your own home. Whether you choose to exercise while dealing with mesothelioma or diet when battling with breast cancer, living well can be easier and more beneficial than you might think. There are several things you can do at home if you want to live healthier and be happier each day.

Exercising is something recommended by doctors to their patients on a daily basis. Even if you have cancer, exercise can be one of the best things for you. It will help tremendously when it comes to how you feel physically and mentally. For instance, cancer patients often find that they feel stronger and more energetic after exercising. Exercising has been shown to fight fatigue and boost the mood with the release of endorphins. Others find that a daily dose of small exercise helps them to feel better about themselves and gives them something productive that they look forward to. Even if you're struggling with cancer, a small amount of exercise will do you a world of good.

The one thing you need to determine is what type of exercise you'll be doing and how often you'll be doing it. You might want to discuss these options with your doctor to make sure that you are getting the right amount of exercise depending on your state of health and stage of treatment. Certain cancer patients are advised to only workout lightly two times a week while others are encouraged to exercise like any other normal and healthy individual. Your doctor will be able to help you figure out an exercise program that will fit your needs perfectly so that you can enjoy optimum health.

Along with healthy and regular exercise, eating a nutritious diet is also recommended for anyone undergoing cancer treatment or even for those in remission. Steering clear of processed and junk foods is a wonderful way to get rid of unhealthy habits and replace them with healthier ones. Making small daily adjustments is the easiest way to eat healthier. Switch sugary snacks to healthier varieties and always try to make healthy swaps at mealtime. Your doctor probably already has you on a strict diet, so make sure that you talk with them before you make any type of change yourself.

Thanks to Melanie Bowen for this wonderful article and she is right, even if you are dealing with a horrible illness, you should live a healthful lifestyle. She is a regular contributor to the Mesothelioma Cancer Alliance blog.

Please check out these 2 books if you are fighting cancer or you know someone who is fighting it. My client actually absorbed the information from these two books on how to cook for her husband when he was fighting kidney cancer. He has been cancer free for 7 years now. Update 2017*

  1. Exercise is the most efficient stress buster, in my opinion. It literally can't hurt, as long as you're not overexerting yourself. Fortunately, I've never had cancer, but I have experienced my fair share of illness. Exercise and healthy eating is always the quickest pick-me-up. Great post!

  4. This is really inspiring. I imagine it's a double edged thing to get started, though. It's hard to get moving when you're overwhelmed with something of such a huge gravity as being diagnosed with cancer, but getting moving is one of the things that can help you feel better. I guess the best thing is to keep spreading the word and inspiring more people like you're doing!
